'99 Chevy S-10 Heater Core Replacement Instructions

If the heater in your 1999 Chevrolet S10 is forcing air through the vents but not warming up, your heater core may be to blame. The S10's heater core is positioned at the top of the engine compartment, simplifying access for replacement.

  1. Location

    • The heater core in your 1999 Chevrolet S10 is mounted beneath the heater and air vent module. Facing the engine compartment from the front of the car, the heater core is beneath the large square box in the center of the engine against the firewall.

    Replacement

    • Remove the two bolts securing the heater and air vent module to the engine with a socket and ratchet. Remove the screws from the heater core cover with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the heater core out of the compartment. Replace the core with a new one, install the cover and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Position the heater and air vent module in place and secure it with the mounting bolts.

    Function

    • The heater core is an essential part of the passenger compartment heating system. It draws heat from the engine by forcing hot coolant through the core to be forced through the blower motor into the cabin.

    Warning

    • A failing heater core produces a sweet odor that often resembles a maple scent. Buy a replacement heater core from an auto parts specialist or Chevrolet dealer.
