Technology has given vehicle manufacturers the ability to lessen the amount of emissions from a car's exhaust. Using components, such as a ported vacuum switch, allows accurate control of when emissions control components begin functioning.
A ported vacuum switch works along with the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The EGR valve allows some of the emitted fumes from the exhaust manifold to reenter the intake manifold to control fume output.
Typically found in non-computerized EGR systems, the ported vacuum switch's role with the EGR is to control its activation. The vehicle must be warmed up and under a load for the EGR to function correctly. Once the car is adequately running, the ported vacuum switch triggers the EGR into operation.
The ported vacuum switch's control of the EGR effectively reduces the amount of harmful gasses released into the atmosphere. In addition, it also cools the combustion temperature for efficient engine performance.
