What Is a 56Y NEMA Frame?

A 56Y NEMA frame is a type of frame motor endorsed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). NEMA is a trade organization that develops and publishes standards governing a wide variety of electrical equipment and procedures.

56Y Frame Motors

A 56Y frame motor is a type of three-phase, reversible condenser fan motor. They are generally used in compressors, conveyors, fans, pumps, machine tools, material handling and in many other capacities. Frame sizes are standardized by NEMA to facilitate trade.

As of 2010, the NEMA standard governing 56Y frame motors is entitled "NEMA MG 1-2007 Condensed: Information Guide for General Purpose Industrial AC Small and Medium Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor Standards." It was published in April 2008, and provides a breakdown chart of motor frame sizes, among other information.

Purchase Information

The standard may be downloaded from the NEMA website. As of 2010, only a hard copy is available. The hard copy may be purchased for $101.
