Free to Air Satellite Information

Free-to-air satellite channels do not require a subscription service.

In 2010, telephone companies and satellite TV providers owned nearly 40 percent of the premium television market, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. As long as you own a satellite dish, however, you can receive free television.

  1. Identification

    • Satellite cable and pay-per-view channels encrypt their signals to prevent unauthorized use. Some broadcasters do not use encryption, and allow anyone with a satellite dish to receive their channel free over the air, according to electronics expert Bob Rankin.

    Considerations

    • To receive free-to-air (FTA) satellite channels, you must have a special FTA receiver, according to Tech FAQ. Also, not all satellite dishes can receive any satellite channel. Any satellite dish that can receive signals in the C- or K-band should suffice for most consumers.

    Tip

    • The website LyngSat keeps an ongoing list of FTA satellite channels and the band and satellite location of the signal.
