What Is Waterborne Automotive Paint?

Waterborne paint is a latex paint used as an alternative to solvent-based paints. Waterborne paint is a safe alternative to other paint types frequently used for painting automobiles.

  1. Description

    • Waterborne paint has a significantly lower volatile organic compound (VOC) content compared to solvent-based paints. VOC emissions can be harmful to people because they contain hazardous pollutants. Waterborne paint is made of synthetic resins and pigments and low amounts of coalescing solvents. These properties offer a safer way to paint automobiles.

    Details

    • Waterborne paints must be stored at temperatures no lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent freezing. Once the water evaporates from the paint, the paint is dry, offering a faster way to paint vehicles. Solvent-based paint often takes months to completely dry.

    Features

    • According to "Hot Rod" magazine, more than 70 percent of all original equipment manufacturer (OEM) vehicles are painted with waterborne paints. Waterborne paints are applied using a two-step process. The car is first painted with the basecoat color and then covered by a clear coat. The paint job is then prepared using standard procedures. Wet sanding is used first and finally the car goes through a final buffing process.
