How the State of New Jersey Evaluates Transcripts for a Teacher?
New Jersey requires that all teachers applying for certification in the state submit official transcripts as part of the application process. Transcripts help in determining the candidate's eligibility for certification, according to the New Jersey Department of Education (DOE).
-
Types
-
New Jersey offers several types of teacher certificates and endorsements, each with its own educational requirements, according to the state's DOE. Transcripts ensure that basic educational requirements as well as any specific requirements for the desired certification or endorsement have been met. Transcripts confirm the completion of required coursework and the satisfactory GPA of applicants.
Requirements
-
Transcripts for teachers applying for a first-time certificate in New Jersey are evaluated to ensure that the teacher maintained a 2.5 GPA if he graduated before September 1, 2004, or a 2.75 GPA if she graduated after September 1, 2004 in a Bachelor's or graduate level degree program or an approved post-baccalaureate program, according to the DOE. For teachers seeking a subject area endorsement, the DOE evaluates transcripts to ensure that the minimum number of coursework hours have been completed in each area.

Considerations
-
According to the DOE, as of November 2004, New Jersey teachers whose transcripts reflect a GPA between 2.5 and 2.75 are still eligible for certification if their scores fall in the accepted range on the PRAXIS certification exam. In addition, teachers whose transcripts reflect a GPA of over 3.5 qualify to pass the required exam with a lower score.
