Won't boot? Troubleshoot!

Laptops, or any computer for that matter, commonly boot incorrectly. The problems could range from hard drive errors to malware and viruses.

  1. Probable Causes

    • A laptop may not boot up for two common reasons: hard drive errors (developed naturally as data corrupts itself) or malware (viruses and other software that destroy your System32 file). Both cause the computer to boot up normally until a point where it tries to access important files that are blocked by either of these two reasons, and then the computer immediately shuts down.

    Solution

    • Hard drive errors can be fixed by either reinstalling windows, which would delete all of the data, or using any CD that has the ability to run disk checks (like Ubuntu or the Windows install disc). While more expensive, replacing the hard drive is your best bet to ensure stability.

Malware can be solved only by reinstalling Windows. Modern hackers are extremely crafty in the way they create viruses, which attach to your most important files, so reviving your computer may only be possible through someone with extreme technical experience.

    Prevention

    • Prevent hard drive errors by keeping your laptop steady and flat when using it. Shaking the laptop can cause the hard drive to scratch itself, making data unreadable and causing it to shut down. All hard drives go bad eventually, but shaking them only speeds up the progress.

Prevent malware by never clicking on suspicious links in email or on the Internet. Download only software you trust, and always use a secure browser.
