Why Isn't My Freezer Freezing Anything?

A poorly functioning freezer can be the result of malfunctioning parts on the refrigerator. Simple troubleshooting techniques will help you pinpoint your problem.

Check the energy settings

  • Check the energy settings inside your freezer. Try raising the setting a couple of notches and see if this will bring any change.

Poorly Sealed Door

  • The door of the freezer may have cracks or small openings that is letting cold air out. Feel along the edge of the door for any breezes.

Dirty Condenser

  • The condenser, or hot part of the refrigerator, may have become clogged with dirt and dust, making little or no heat transfer possible. The system will overload and shut off as a result. Thoroughly clean the condenser and run the system again.

Poor Air Flow

  • There is an evaporator fan in each freezer that controls air flow and regulates temperature. If the fan stops working for any reason (seized/worn motor bearings or frost accumulation), the freezer will cease to maintain a regular temperature.

Malfunctioning Defrost System

  • A broken defrost system is the most common cause of broken refrigerators and freezers. Check for a buildup of ice in the back of your freezer. If you find a large layer of ice, your defrost system is the problem. The heating timer has not engaged, has covered the evaporating coil with ice and has hindered air flow to the rest of the system.
