Ping pong originated in England in the 1800s and spread through Europe by the start of the 20th century. In 1926 the International Table Tennis Federation was created.
A ping pong table is 5 feet wide and 9 feet long. The net is 6 inches high.
The ping pong ball is 1.57 inches in diameter and weighs just under 1.5 ounces. Official balls must be white, matt or orange.
Each time your opponent fails to return the ball before it bounces twice or hits the ball into the net or off the table, you are given a point.
The first player to 21 points wins. Most matches are played as best of five games.
In 1971 the American ping pong team was invited to play with the Chinese ping pong team. They team was the first group of Americans to visit China since 1949 and the visit led to the phrase "ping pong diplomacy."
