We tend to see neckties as a way to add pattern and visual interest to an outfit, but the right solid tie can often be a dashing choice as well. Far from boring in their simplicity, a solid tie can be the anchor that pins down your look and (ahem) ties the whole thing together. Here are five great ways to style an outfit using simple solid ties.
While it’s true that dressing well in a coat and tie offers an outlet for experimentation with patterns and colors, few things will ever remain as perennially sharp as the minimalist look of a dark gray suit, crisp white shirt and simple black tie. It’s a look that works for any man, and is appropriate in any situation. A silk knit tie, like the one pictured above, adds texture for some visual interest. An understated yet stylish classic, the black silk knit tie may just be the only tie to have if you only have one.
A bold striped shirt can add some punch to a look in a generally conservative palette of navy, white and burgundy. In this look, a solid grenadine tie lets the shirt be the star of the show, with a little help from a paisley pocket square. A little texture to the tie once again allows the tie to make its presence felt without getting in the way.
A checked tweed can be a great piece for fall and winter, but if the pattern is very large or dense, it can be a tough match for a tie. A wool knit tie in a color that matches a secondary color in the tweeds pattern brings everything together for a look that’s rich and cozy.
The same is true of festive holiday tartans. A bold plaid jacket can be a fun piece on certain occasions, but with strong pieces like that it’s best to let them stand alone, pairing them with simple solid items elsewhere in the outfit. A crisp white shirt and solid navy tie in silk twill do the job nicely.
For less formal occasions, a solid knit tie can be a great way to incorporate a less than dressy shirt into a look. A dark plaid shirt may not have been meant to wear with a tie, but with a nice solid and a comfy tweed it works just fine. It’s a great way to dress up a look and still remain laid-back and comfortable.
A solid tie can also be a great choice in a fully casual look. Take a favorite plaid shirt and a good pair of jeans, for example. With the addition of a solid wool twill tie you’re just as casual, but a little bit more stylish. Skip the sports jacket and grab your favorite piece of outerwear and you’re set.
These are just a few of the ways that a solid tie works its magic. Keep a few on hand in useful colors such as black, navy, dark green and burgundy, and you’ll find they can be a great tool for finding creative new ways to style other items in your collection.
