Set the Table for Mother’s Day Using Some Paper and Your Imagination

A DIY Mother's Day tablescape is created using everyday dishes and scrapbook paper

I know one thing for sure — moms around the world have more than earned the right to their own special day. As the daughter and daughter-in-law to two lovely moms, I’m of the mind that Mother’s Day really should come at least once a week! But since I have this one day to show them just how much I care, I went all out with a colorful and thoughtful ice cream social tablescape fit for the main ladies in my life.

For this project, you'll need scrapbook paper, scissors and a large, 3-inch hole punch

A variety in patterns, one large, one medium and one small, give this collection interest

Happily, going “all out” did not require a major budget or designer labels. No, I was able to pull it all off simply by accenting my collection of white dishes and vintage glassware with a few coordinating patterns of scrapbook paper. Clocking in at just 50-odd cents a piece, these pretty pieces of paper are my absolute favorite go-to DIY supply.

A dinner plate stands in as a template for creating a paper charger

The paper charger is now cut to size and ready to place on the table

To achieve the look of springtime chargers for my dessert plates without actually splurging on extra tabletop accessories, I grabbed the most vibrantly patterned scrapbook paper (the floral) and cut it to size using a standard dinner plate as my template.

Use the craft hole punch to create modern day doilies

Name cards are created simply by cutting squares out of scrapbook paper and then folding in half

For the other two patterns of paper, I decided to turn one into my idea of modern doilies to go under the tiny ice cream bowls, and the other was repurposed as name cards. I simply used a three-inch paper punch to cut my doilies to size, and snipped squares out of the other paper to create the name cards. To finish the look, I wrote my guests’ names (including the guest of honor!) in calligraphy script using a Sharpie marker. In no time, I had a table fit for an ice cream social in my mom’s honor!

An ultra feminine color palette of pinks and cream make this the perfect Mother's Day set up

The paper chargers were a snap to put together, and pull the entire scheme together

This holiday ice cream social tablescape came together for under $10
