Types of Concrete Foundation Repair
Concrete foundation repair is difficult, but certain types of repairs can be attempted by average property owners. These include termite prevention, leak repairs and crack repairs. Even these repairs will require time and effort, and could, potentially, result in a return of the problem. Repairs that are more complex than that require professional consultation. Does this Spark an idea?

Repair Risks
-
As with any repair, one of the risks of concrete foundation repair is not actually fixing the problem. Even simple repairs are time-consuming and require patience. More complex repairs are involved and difficult.
When taking on concrete foundation repairs, you should understand that the work is usually done by professionals. If you try to fix the foundation on your own, you may fail or even worsen the problem.
Termite Prevention
-
Termites can cause serious damage to a concrete foundation by eating away at supporting roots and earth. Look for termite tunnels beside the concrete-based structure. If termites are present, they can be eliminated by using soil poison, which is available at most garden stores. The termites may return, however, after some time. If in doubt, it is best to call an exterminator to eliminate the pest problem.

Leak Repair
-
Leak repairs are some of the most difficult repairs that one could handle without professional help. To fix a leak, you must dig all the way to the bottom of the foundation along the outside foundation wall. The foundation has to be covered in cement plaster and foundation tar over a period of several days.
If the leak is not causing damage, it is better to avoid this repair altogether.
Crack Repair
-
Although cracks may seem foreboding, they are some of the easiest repairs. All you have to do is stuff premixed cement into the crack, smooth the surface and wait for the cement to dry. This will hold the crack in place and prevent more cracking.
On the other hand, cracks can be an indication of serious structural problems. A problem may be present if the crack is wider than 1 inch or if it widens or reappears after a repair.
Advanced Repairs
-
If the above repairs do not work and a specific problem returns, it is time to call a contractor to look at your foundation. Simple foundation repairs are difficult, but advanced repairs should not even be attempted by amateurs. Severe or returning cracks, in particular, are an indication that it may be time to enlist professional help.
