Oust Vs. Lysol

Many household cleaners claim to disinfect and eliminate odors. However, many people often wonder about the benefits of the different products available. Two of the most common are Oust and Lysol.

Disinfecting Power of Oust

  • Many disinfectants can have an effect on most bacteria. In fact, Oust disinfectant claims to kill 99.9% of bacteria in the home. While the claim only stands true for Oust sprayed on hard, nonporous surfaces, it will kill bacteria and viruses, including Influenza A. It also kills bacteria such as staphylococcus, E. coli and salmonella; viruses such as rotavirus (a cause for diarrhea in children), the flu, and herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2; and fungi such as trichophyton mentagrophytes, which causes athlete's foot.

Uses for Oust

  • Oust can be used to disinfect hard surfaces. It also can be used as an air sanitizer. Oust attacks the bacteria, helping to mask odors, and cleans the sprayed area. It can be used on diaper pails, garbage cans, sports equipment, door knobs, toilet seats and countertops, among other surfaces.

Disinfecting Power of Lysol

  • Lysol is effective as a disinfectant as well, claiming to kill 99.9% of bacteria. When used on finished surfaces, it can disinfect; when used on soft or porous surfaces, it can control mold or mildew. It kills viruses such as influenza, rotavirus, rhinovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus. It also protects against bacteria such as staphylococcus, salmonella, E. coli and tuberculosis. It kills assorted fungi, including a fungus that causes athlete's foot, mold and mildew.

Uses for Lysol

  • Lysol, like Oust, can be used to disinfect nonporous, hard surfaces, such as basins, showers, car interiors and storage areas. However, on pillows, mattresses and shower curtains, it can be used to control and kill mold and mildew. Lysol also makes formulas specifically for cleaning the bathroom, toilets and your kitchen.

Comparison of Products

  • It seems that in product quality, both Oust and Lysol perform well. They both are able to mask odors in the air. They attack bacteria on hard surfaces. They work to kill viruses and have been shown to be effective. Oust offers an Air Sanitizer with surface disinfectant and an air sanitizer candle. Lysol has more products available, including a disinfectant spray, wipes, all-purpose cleaners and Neutra Air aerosol cleaners. While both products are comparable, Lysol seems to be used for a broader range of activities.
