Embroidery hoops are not expensive, and anyone who does cross stitch should not be without one. Embroidery hoops are useful for cross stitch and other small embroidery projects. Large pictures are put on a stretcher frame instead. You should choose an embroidery hoop in a size that will fit around the whole design of your project. Many pieces have more than one design, so you will need a different size to fit each one.

    Facts

  1. There is historical evidence that embroidery was used as a decoration on clothing as far back as 6000 BC. Embroidery hoops were once made from bone until the industrial revolution and the use of metals became popular. Today's embroidery hoops are made so that they do less damage to fabric than previous styles.
  2. Types

  3. There are three basic types of embroidery hoops - hand held, table stands and floor stands. Embroidery hoops are usually made of either wood or plastic. Both types of material are a big improvement over the older metal ones because they do not leave marks on fabric.
  4. Features

  5. Embroidery hoops have two pieces. A smaller hoop is placed under the fabric while a larger one is fitted over the material and around the smaller one. Tension is adjusted by a turning screw on the side. Together, the two hoops hold the fabric tight and straight, ensuring that your stitches will be even and have the same tension. Embroidery hoops are different sizes and are typically round, oval, or square.
  6. Functions

  7. Embroidery frames perform a vital function because without them, the finished project would not look neat. Each type has a different function as well. A hand held embroidery hoop makes a project portable. The table top embroidery hoops are good for small spaces. They are made of wood and have an adjustable stand that allows you to tilt the work to the best angle for you. This type only comes with one size hoop. Floor models allow you to sit anywhere and still not have to hold the work. The hoop part can be folded for easy storage.
  8. Considerations

  9. Consider buying a set of hand held embroidery hoops. Eventually, you will need more than one size and by buying a set, you can save money. You might also consider buying a hoop stand for the hand held hoops, but it is only made for the larger hoops. It is not costly and because the larger hoops are harder to hold, it is something to consider as you explore your hobby.
