Chandeliers can be a beautiful addition to any home. Many times, however, they are positioned in out-of-reach areas that you cannot tackle with your weekly cleaning regimen. This allows dirt and debris to dull the chandelier's appearance over time. While there are several retail products that clean chandeliers, these are expensive and no more effective than a simple homemade solution.
Liquid dish detergent will break up dirt and scum, leaving your chandelier sparkling as it was when first purchased. Typically the entire chandelier can be soaked, but you also can mix a solution in a spray bottle, and clean individual parts by hand. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of 2 cups water and 20 drops liquid dish detergent. Spray onto a cloth or directly onto the chandelier and wipe. Alternately, place the chandelier in a bucket or the bathtub, add water and enough dish detergent to create a sudsy solution, and let soak for an hour or two. Let air dry, and repeat when necessary to keep the chandelier looking its best.
Vinegar is another solution that will safely clean a chandelier. The same method can be used as mentioned above, by either spraying the solution on or by soaking. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of 1 cup distilled white vinegar (available in any grocery store) and 2 cups water. Spray onto a cloth or the chandelier directly, and clean. Alternately, soak the chandelier, using a ratio of 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon water. Let soak for one to two hours, then let air dry.
Ammonia is not recommended for chandeliers with metal or silver parts, as it can dull the finish. If spraying the solution onto the chandelier, mix 2 cups water to 1/2 cup non-sudsing ammonia. Spray and clean. Alternately, soak in a solution of 1 cup non-sudsing ammonia to 2 gallons water. Let soak for one to two hours, rinse and let air dry.
