Termites are not only an annoyance, they can cost homeowners thousands. Once termites are spotted, the infestation must be dealt with immediately or permanent damage will result. There are several ways to get rid of termites but homeowners usually want the best and most economical method.
Using bait traps is a natural and inexpensive option to rid your home of termites. The termite traps are baited with wood or scent that attracts the working termites inside. They eventually die due to lack of food, which will eventually kill off the queen of the colony. Once this occurs, any remaining termites will leave, thinking the main food source has disappeared. Baiting provides an alternative to the inconvenience and expense of fumigation.
Borax or Boric Acid
Borax is another possibility for those looking to tackle the termite problem on their own. Boric acid mixed with glycol is very effective with termites and is a non-toxic insecticide. Simply place the mixture on the termite trail. The worker termites will walk through and be poisoned. By repeating this process over several weeks, the workers will die out. Eventually, the queen will die off due to lack of food and the colony will disperse. Borax and boric acid provide a healthier and safer alternative to harsh, toxic chemicals. Although this mixture is non-toxic it still needs to be used with caution. It can be harmful if ingested, so keep it out of reach from children and pets.
Don't be afraid to turn up the heat when the weather starts to turn. Termites hate dryness and cannot survive for long in excessive heat. Keep your home free from damp and moisture. Termites love damp spots, especially if there is soil nearby but will soon die out in extremely dry conditions. Make frequent checks around the house to look for potential damp spots. Check your air conditioner for signs of leakage. Check your water systems, pipes and taps as well.
