Outdoor curtains on a deck are a great, unique way to add an extra bit of flair to a deck. These curtains can hang on railings for decoration, or can be raised and lowered for privacy from nosy neighbors, protection from the elements or even from mosquitos. They are also easy to install yourself for a reasonable cost.
Overhead curtains can be installed if you have an overhead roof to the deck or a tall railing. The curtains can hang on a curtain rod and be pushed to the side when they are not being used or rolled up above the deck when you want open air to flow across the deck. Roll-up curtains like these can be easily adjusted with a pull cord. These curtains should be made out of a waterproof fabric or canvas, so that they aren't damaged by the elements and won't allow mold or mildew to grow on them.
If bugs or mosquitos are a problem on your deck, then mosquito netting is an excellent type of curtain to buy and install around your deck. While this may seem like something that is visually unappealing, the light colored mosquito netting actually diffuses light that goes through it, which gives the deck itself a comfy glow. Most importantly, it is bug- and bite-free. Mosquito netting can be designed at a custom size for your porch and can be easily installed on curtain rods and attractively tied to a corner of the deck when it is not being used.
Curtains as Decoration
If you have a long porch railing, curtains can be folded and slung across the railing to make an attractive decoration at an event or party being held on your porch or in your backyard. Curtains can also be hung on the porch itself to hide an unattractive column or area of the porch. Whatever the reason, this is an opportunity to purchase attractive new curtains to bring a new feel to the porch itself. If the porch has an overhang, then the curtains can usually be made of just about any type of fabric, as long as they aren't going to get wet. They are also easy to install, as they can be hung from a curtain rod off the side of the house or off a curtain rod attached to the ceiling of the deck itself.
