The Correct Way to Put Sheets on a Bed

Save

Making a bed may not be terribly exciting, but crawling into a neatly made bed at night seems to be a nice way to unwind from the day you've just experienced. Using the correct procedure for putting sheets on your bed will make this a quick task and help form a habit so that you have that neat and comfy place to lay your head every night.

Strip It

  • This may take some getting used to, but in order to make your bed properly, you need to strip it down every time. Yes, you may leave on a mattress cover or other protective items, but the sheets all need to come off.
If your sheet set has fitted sheets (the type with the elastic that stretches to hold the sheet on the corners) then you may leave it on and simply make sure it is secure and smooth it out with your hands.

Hospital Corners

  • The hospital corners method is the best way to properly apply the mattress sheet. To accomplish this, lay the flat sheet out on the bed and center it on the mattress. The sheet should hang over the sides and ends of the mattress in equal amounts.
Fold the section hanging over the head of the mattress underneath tightly and then do the same with the section hanging over the foot of the bed. Now you will have loose sheet hanging on both sides of the mattress. Tuck in the side pieces starting at the head of the mattress and work your way down to the foot, making sure that all of it is tucked in tightly, using your hand to smooth the top surface of the mattress. Repeat on the opposite side. You should see the tight corners as a result.

Cover Sheet

  • Your cover sheet is the one that will cover you when you lie in the bed. The procedure for putting this sheet on is the same as the mattress sheet, only you must leave the head exposed so that you may get in.
Spread the sheet out on the bed and center it the same way that you did in "hospital corners". Fold the head end of the sheet down until it exposes approximately a foot of the mattress sheet and smooth out the sheet's surface. Tuck in the foot end of the sheet as you did above and then tightly and smoothly tuck in the side while using your hand to keep the surface smooth.
You may then apply the blankets or comforters of your choosing. Usually thicker comforters are draped over and smoothed out with loose hanging ends, but thinner blankets may be put on in the hospital corners fashion as well.
