Stairs Wall Decor Ideas

The stairways are often an afterthought in terms of home decoration. However, they are also often one of a home's more high-traffic areas. Why not brighten up your stairway with some innovative wall decor? This area is a perfect gallery space that provides a different angle at each step.

  • You can add visual interest to your stairwell with paint. This is an ideal accent wall, because the color is typically somewhat visible from both floors of the house. Go for something light or bright since this space is typically dark and narrow. This can be a good wall for a mural or a faux finish. You can also add dimension and a bit of humor to your stairwell by painting a fake window on the wall. Begin by painting four white or sky blue squares (or use dark blue for a nighttime scene) to represent windowpanes, and then and add silhouettes in black or brown of the window frame, birds and tree branches. You can add painted or actual curtains for more dimension. Create color without paint by putting up wallpaper.

  • Doll up your stairs with some cool display shelves and accessories. You can hang small floating shelves, but make sure they do not jut out into the space necessary for climbing the stairs. Small wall cubes work well, and you can place objects inside them or on top of them. Remember to place unbreakable objects as accessories here, because displays inevitably get jostled when people are carrying laundry, furniture or other large objects up and down the stairs. You can paint shelves or wall cubes in bright contrasting colors for added visual pop. Paintings, drawings and collages on paper or canvas also are ideal wall art. Stack them diagonally up the stairs, in matching black gallery frames for a modern look, or mismatched frames for a bohemian aesthetic.

Green Design

  • Use the contemporary penchant for eco-friendly design in your wall decor. Scour the garage, attic or basement for metal hardware or remnants that can be repurposed into wall art. For example, a cabinet door can make a beautiful frame for a series of postcards, or you can attach some vintage drawer pulls onto its surface. Hand-painted floor tiles can serve as paintings. Wrap old textiles around a canvas for a crafty piece of wall art.
