Post-construction cleaning can be done yourself or by a professional.

Whether you are a contractor who is working in the construction field or a homeowner who has had work done on your home, you must take steps to clean up the mess that is left behind when a job is done. You can hire a professional cleaning service to do the job or follow some basic guidelines for effectiveness and do that work yourself. Regardless of the method you choose, safety is of the utmost importance and should be observed throughout the cleaning process.

    Choosing a Professional

  1. Search for post-construction cleaning professionals on a website that lists available providers in your area, such as ServiceMagic.com. Additionally, check out any prospects with the Better Business Bureau to ensure that their reputation and customer service are up to par.

Inquire about detailed services that you would like to have included in the cleaning. Only hire a professional who is willing, able and qualified to do these specific services.

Have the professional draw up a contract with all related costs, rates and other stipulations. Do not sign anything or let him begin work until you are happy with the terms.

Ensure that your professional provider is insured in case of damages before she begins the cleaning process. Payment should be issued only after all terms of the contract have been fulfilled and the cleaning work has been checked and approved.
  2. DIY Cleaning Tips

  3. Consider renting a commercial-size trash container if you are doing the cleaning yourself and there will be a lot of debris to dispose of. These containers have a large capacity, and the rental company will haul them away when you are finished.

Dry dust or sweep all walls and follow up with a wet wipe of the entire area. Using a shop vac on the walls, window sills and floor is another option as well. This needs to be done in order to remove the harmful drywall or sawdust that is left clinging to surfaces throughout a building after construction.

Remove paint or caulk splotches and spills from windows, trim, carpet and hard floors with cleaning solution and towels. A carpet-cleaning machine may be necessary for the flooring, and a razor blade or other scraping tool can be used for windows and trim if needed as well.

Apply rubbing alcohol to labels on appliances and windows in order to remove them completely without damaging the finish. Clean out all garbage, scraps and putty from inside cabinet, corners, tubs and other areas completely.
