If you are going to crochet with yarn and add beaded embellishments, you will need beads that are large enough to string onto the yarn you will be using. If you are going to make beaded wire jewelry, then you need some pliable jewelry wire and beads that can be strung onto it.
For bead crochet with yarn, you will need scissors and a yarn needle to finish off your work. For beading with wire, you will probably need pliers and jewelry findings (such as earring hooks or clasp closures) to finish your work. -
For a yarn project, you need to begin the project by stringing the beads onto your yarn. String the amount of beads called for in your pattern, and slide them down the yarn so you can pull them up when you need them. You will crochet without the beads for the specified pattern, and then pull up one bead at a time as needed.
When you pull up a bead, you will simply work it into the stitching. You will probably make a stitch, pull the bead up, and then make a second stitch (this may vary by pattern); essentially, you are sandwiching the bead between two stitches to hold it in place this way. Continue on with your pattern, pulling up beads from the yarn as needed. -
When you bead crochet with wire, you will also begin by stringing the beads onto the wire. Instead of crocheting with yarn, you will make your stitches with the wire. A steel crochet hook is probably best for this type of project, in order to be sturdy enough to bend the wires.
Again, you will crochet a stitch into the wire and then pull up a bead as you go. You may incorporate the bead into the stitch or pull it up between stitches to hold it in place. When you finish your project, you will have to bend the wire into a safe position and attach it to your jewelry findings.
