The Potomac Yard area of Alexandria and Arlington in Northern Virginia is known as being a very kid-friendly area, as it is home to many families. If you are planning a children's birthday party, there are a wide range of local options for you to consider.

    Art Party

  1. Abrakadoodle is a nationwide franchise offering arts education activities. The local Abrakadoodle facility, located in Falls Church, Virginia, also hosts a variety of kids' art parties. You can choose a theme such as Monet Water Lilies, Castle and Dragons or Party Pirates, and work with a coordinator to plan a party in which each child will get to create and take home an original work of art. Prices start around $165 for six children, with additional charges for extra guests or an additional instructor.

  2. Party in the Park

  3. Arlington County's many parks offer a number of options for hosting parties large and small. You may rent a picnic shelter to seat up to 200 of your child's closest friends (the 2009 price was $125 for residents, $250 for residents), book a children's gymnastics party at Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center ($125 for 10 children ages 4 to 12), or even reserve a baseball or soccer field or a basketball or volleyball court. If you're planning a summer birthday party and your child is a baseball fan, you may wish to schedule a trip to see the Alexandria Aces Collegiate Summer Baseball Club, who play all of their home games at the Frank E. Mann Field at Four Mile Run Park.

  4. Make Your Own Pizza Party

  5. If your child loves to cook and/or loves to eat pizza, you may wish to host a pizza party at Generous George's. The "Kids Make Your Own Birthday" package includes tableside pizzas with an assortment of toppings so each child may create her own meal. The restaurant also supplies bottomless sodas or iced tea for each party guest, party decorations, kids' chefs hats, and ice cream desserts.

  6. Movie Party

  7. Children elementary school age and up might enjoy a group outing to the movies for a birthday party. The Regal Potomac Yard 16 usually offers several G and PG-rated movies, and features stadium seating and digital sound. You can book a special "Star for a Day" birthday party package package that includes movie admission for all guests (free for the birthday child!), refreshments, and a special party room. The cost varies by the size of the party, so you'll need to contact Regal Cinemas to speak with a representative regarding your party.

  8. Party in Your Own Backyard

  9. If you prefer a party you do not have to travel to, you can always host one in your own yard with a little help from Alexandria party rental company Moonbounce Express. Inflatable rentals include several different bouncy castles, a bouncy rocket a spaceship moonbounce, and a moonbounce that allows you to shoot hoops as you bounce. If you'd like to add a little (or not-so-little) character to your party, you can also rent a 9 foot high inflatable SpongeBob.
