Preteen Girl Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Preteen Girl Bedroom Decorating Ideasthumbnail
Use color to decorate a preteen's bedroom.

Don't lose sleep over a specific theme when decorating a preteen girl's room. Between today and tomorrow, she will have gone from surfer girl to a girl with her head in the clouds, dreaming of bunnies. Instead, add color, either bold and vibrant or mellow and cheerful. Consider a "hang out" space where she can go when she wants some time alone--a decor that will take her from preteen to college years.

    1. Seeing Spots

      • Spruce up with purples, aqua and cyan blues. Paint one aqua wall and the remaining ones in a complementary cyan blue. For less drama, go with basic white.

Create atmosphere with adhesive wall dots of various sizes in the same color scheme. Compose a wavy pattern or stick them intermittently on every wall. Overlap several for a more spectacle display. Because the dots are a bold pattern, keep other wall art to a minimum.

Find a quilt with appliquéd polka dots to mimic the wall art. Look for a striped bed skirt with two of the three colors and matching pillow shams. Pile floor pillows in a mix of purples, aqua and cyan blues to create a cozy nook for reading or hanging out with friends.

      Fresh as a Daisy

      • Revamp with a vivid orange, citrus yellows and fuchsia combination. Mix these tropical colors with a balance of soft hues or touches of white for the walls and floor so the room is not overly vibrant.

Start by painting the walls in soft white. Then, look for wall art such as monogrammed, framed, painted letters. Dress up windows with lively daisy window panels for extra pop.

Choose a solid comforter in one of the tropical shades. For a finishing touch, select a citrus-striped bed skirt and brightly colored pillow shams in bursting patterns for the bed. Complete the look by changing any knobs with hand-painted, fuchsia daisy ones.

Reserve an area for a quiet haven. Add a comfy, bold-colored bean bag chair and a painted wooden crate accented with orange and fuchsia daisies along its sides. Place a beside lamp atop the crate with a tropical-hued shade.

      Twist of Lemon-Lime

      • Design a cozy and inviting room with lemon-lime and a dash of lavender. Paint the walls in lavender wisp, leaving the trim creamy white. Choose a wall corner to stencil lavender and pale yellow flowers with lime-green foliage, starting at the bottom of the baseboards and going up to a height just above the bed. Add a few dragonflies to flutter about.

Hang billowy, lemon-lime window treatments with dragonfly-designed tiebacks for a little whimsy. Look for an appliquéd, embroidered quilt with plaid accents and a matching plaid bed skirt in the same color scheme. Place button-trimmed throw pillows of varying sizes on top of a white wrought-iron day bed.

Add a lavender chenille throw rug to the bed. Near the stenciled flowers, place an upholstered armchair for late-night readings or listening to music.
