Ideas to Hang Curtains

You can hang curtains on curtain rods, but you can also get creative and hang them from cornice boards and painted dowels for less expensive alternatives. If you're decorating a theme room, hang your curtains on items related to your room's subject.

Cornice Boards

  • You can hang decorative curtains directly from a cornice board to avoid inserting curtain rod hangers into your wall. Simply attach the curtain fabric to the inside of the cornice board with a staple gun. The curtains will be stationary and primarily for decorative purposes only. You can hang curtain panels this way to fit on either side of a window with shades or blinds where it's not necessary to open and close the curtains for privacy. Cornices are simple to build; cut two boards to fit the width of your window plus 4-6 inches and attach them together at a 90-degree angle along one side. Cut and attach two more boards to cap the ends of your cornice and paint or stain it to match your room's décor.

  • Inexpensive dowel rods can be an alternative to curtain rods when you're decorating your windows on a budget. Spray paint or stain the dowels to match your walls or the trim around the windows, whichever is more visible when you place the rods. If your curtains are made with grommets, you can select a thick dowel to use as a rod. For curtains that slide on, dowels work just as well as curtain rods. You can attach the dowels to the inside of a cornice with wood screws or lay them across brackets on either side of the window. You can also decorate the visible ends of the dowels with wooden or metal attachments like knobs or cutouts. Attach the embellishments with a screw or strong craft glue like E6000.

Theme Rooms

  • Hang your curtains in a theme room with objects that correspond to your design. For example, hang curtains from a baseball bat, a ski pole or a hockey stick in a sports-themed room. For rooms with a garden theme, use a shovel or a hoe to hang your curtains. If your rooms have a particular style rather than a theme, you can hang curtains with items relating to your style. For example, you can clip curtains onto a thin tree branch in a rustic or primitive room. Curtains in your modern living room can hang from a length of chain, stretched taut across the window.
