Design Ideas for Display Cases

Save

Display cases are an essential part of keeping valuable collectibles and antiques safe from outside factors. A display case will protect items from dust, mold and rapid temperature changes. These cases also provide a way to view and enjoy collectibles without constantly handling them. Aspects of designing your own display case include materials used, the size of the case and other decorative elements that can be added.

Customize the Case

  • The most important aspect of a display case is the fit. The items you want to display should fit well inside the case without rubbing against the sides or top of the case. This prevents damage to both the item being displayed and the display case itself. The display case should also feature a way for the collectible items to remain stationery, especially if it is a traveling display case. A notch in the shape of the object can be hollowed out in the bottom of the case, but this will take time and a certain amount of skill with hand and power tools. A simple way to achieve the same effect is to create a square recess that will fit snugly against at least two sides of the object being displayed.

Choose Quality Materials

  • The choice of materials is also important when designing a display case. The materials used should achieve two basic goals: provide a way to view the item and protect the item from damage. Many manufactured and custom-made display cases are made from a combination of wood, acrylic or glass. These are sturdy materials that will help the display case keep out dust and debris.

The lining inside the case is also important. If you are displaying collectible items, the lining should be soft and not able to scratch or damage soft surfaces. Many display cases are lined with velvet or soft cotton materials. Felt is not recommended because it can scratch materials, and has acids that can damage metal.

Make It Versatile

  • A custom display case can serve many purposes. Not only will it protect your items, but it can also become a design feature in a room. Some custom display cases are made to hang a favorite jersey on the wall. Other cases are similar to museum cases where items are displayed flat on a table surface.

Once the basic case is built, you can add many design elements to make it blend with furniture. Flat display cases can be put on a stand or base. A wide range of framing and color options are available for display cases that hang on the wall. The most important design element to remember when building a custom display case for your treasured items is to make the items clearly visible.
