Strawberry Shortcake Birthday Cake Ideas
Strawberry Shortcake is a favorite character of little girls that was created in the '80s, and revamped for the new millennium. She makes a great birthday theme, and of course the cake can actually be a strawberry shortcake! But what should your Strawberry Shortcake birthday cake look like? The three most popular choices are the picture cake, the shaped cake, and the 3-D cake.

Strawberry Shortcake Picture Cake
-
The simplest Strawberry Shortcake cake starts with a basic round or rectangular cake, iced in white or pink. Transfer a picture of Strawberry Shortcake to this blank canvas by blowing up a photocopy to the right size, tracing it on waxed paper, and using a toothpick to poke holes around the outline into the cake. Then just connect the dots with dark gel icing, and fill in the face, hair and hat with colored icing.
You can also trace your picture onto edible rice paper, place it on the cake, and then draw around your design in dark icing right over the rice paper. It will dissolve into the cake before it's eaten.
Draw strawberries on her hat with dark pink or red icing, and the strawberry tops by dragging 3 or 4 strips of green icing up from your strawberry. Decorate around your drawing with real strawberries, more icing strawberries, or the guest of honor's name.
Strawberry Shortcake Shaped Cake
-
If you want your cake shaped like Strawberry Shortcake, start with your plain un-iced round cake, and transfer your drawing onto it, making it take up as much of the cake as possible. Then cut around your design with a sharp knife, and discard (or eat) the pieces, or use them to build up some dimension on Strawberry's hat. Ice the whole cake with colored icing to look like Strawberry Shortcake.
Your second option is to use a Strawberry Shortcake cake mold rather than cutting it out yourself.
Strawberry Shortcake 3-D Cake
-
The easiest way to make your cake have a 3-D effect is to make a tiered cake, using two or three round cakes that get smaller as they go up. Ice your tiered cake in pink, and decorate it with icing strawberries and your guest of honor's name. To get a more cartoonish look, make your designs out of colored fondant and stick them to the cake with icing.
On the top of the cake, put a small plastic Strawberry Shortcake doll, ornament or cardboard cutout. Add some real strawberries around her feet, and on the other tiers, for a realistic effect.
Strawberry Shortcake is a surprisingly easy character to make into a cake, and your party guests will love it.
