Alpacas are native to South America and are bred for their fur. The alpaca fibers are used to make wool. This wool is used to make scarves, hats, sweaters and much more. In addition, sometimes the hide is used to make other articles, such as bedspreads and rugs. If you own an alpaca skin rug, you will need to take special care of it so it will last a long time.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Rug Cleaners

    Care

  1. Your alpaca skin rug is delicate. It should not be used in high traffic areas of your home. Also, avoid placing it in an area that may get dirty easily, like near a kitchen, or an area that tends to get a lot of sunlight.
When your alpaca skin rug gets matted, you can brush it with a wire brush (pet or human). This process will get the rug back to its fluffy state. If your rug starts to smell, sprinkle some talcum powder on top.
To store your rug, it should be kept out in a cool and airy place, not in a bag, storage container or in a musty basement. Simply fold it and put in a closet or similar area.
  2. Cleaning

  3. For a complete wash of your alpaca skin rug, send it to a professional cleaner who specializes in furs. Do not attempt to clean it yourself and, whatever you do, do not stick it in the washer.
Fortunately, you don't need to run to the cleaners for every little spill or stain. You can spot clean your alpaca skin rug with some mild soap and water. Use a sponge and dip it into the soapy mixture and squeeze out the excess water. Gently rub your stain clean. Do not get the rug so wet that it seeps through the fur and into the leather. After it dries, brush it back to being fluffy.
