Memorial Shadow Box Ideas

Shadow boxes come in a variety of sizes and formats. They are designed to display three-dimensional items not just photos. There are two different ways to design shadow boxes. One is the purchase the shadow box and gather the items to display. The other way is to gather the display item and purchase a shadow box. Sometimes, it is difficult to decide what to put in the shadow box. Be aware that shadow boxes should not be displayed in full sunlight and need to be protected against fading.

Remember Me

  • The passing away of someone special is traumatic. One of the best ways to deal with the feelings is to gather up the special memories from that someone, such as special photos and knickknacks. Fasten these items inside the shadow box and frame the photos with ribbons. In one corner, write the name, birth date and date of passing in neat handwriting. Even though you may never forget these items, younger family members may not remember such things.

Treasure Box

  • A treasure box frame has little compartments for items. Near the center of the box, place a photo of the person this shadow box is dedicated to. Find small special items that were valued as treasures. It could be anything from a favorite dried flower, a small glass figurine or even pictures of children. Use non-acid mounting glue or tape. This will not damage items being displayed. Make the arrangement attractive. Once covered with the glass front, there is no need to open it up for cleaning. Write special information on a piece of nice paper and mount it to the back of the box.

Military Memorial

  • Military memorial shadow boxes are important to remember someone or just to remember that time of service. A large, domed shadow box is good for this project. In one corner place a photo of the person in uniform. Next, gather medals and other military items they received in the service. If they have dog tags, include those as well. If there is an article of military uniform, fold it neatly and mount it within the shadow box. Use rust-proof pins if pinning the materials.
