My name is Carol Hughes. I've owned Custom Costumes of Rochester for 25 years now. Today, I'm going to demonstrate some basics of costuming to you. How to dress like a flapper. Flappers come from the 1920s which is a pretty wild gay era just before the stock market sale. The line was basically a straight line. The girls were trying to look like boys and they cut their hair short and they bound their breasts down. You can wear like a handkerchief hem skirt and a pretty straight top that comes down over the waist and down toward the hips. You can also find one piece dresses with a low waistline. A lot of times they wore a lot of fringe. So you can find the dresses that have the fringe going around and girls loved that especially for parties because they just shake all the time with it, and you would add a feather headband or a turban with feathers in it or a cloche hat, lots of boas or fur pieces, usually a scarf for a boa, T-strap shoes and opaque stockings. My name is Carol Hughes and that's how you dress like a flapper girl.
