Summary: Band saw, power drill and power sanders for book stand project. Learn what tools you will need to build a simple book stand in this free wood project video from a woodworking teacher.
To many avid readers, the book stand is a point of pride, an altar dedicated to their good taste and vast knowledge. Their books become essential parts of their lives, best pals as long as they are reading them and then valued friends who can be relied on for a laugh, a smile or a pat on the back when things get tough. In fact, many bibliophiles consider their precious volumes to be part of their family, to be cared for as much--and in some cases more than--their own flesh and blood. Which is why they will settle for nothing less that the best for their home library. And this is why you need a book stand, to keep your book open to the page you want without damaging your faithful book companion.
In this free wood project video, you will learn how to make a simple book stand, which will not only be helpful for holding open a cookbook, but help when studying or doing research as well. Woodworking expert Jon Olson will demonstrate each step in making a book stand, from choosing tools and materials to applying the final finish coat. He will show you how to sand and cut this project as well as how to drill holes for the hinges.
"Hi, this is Jon and in this clip I will be talking about the tools needed to complete our book stand. The first tool that we are going to be needing is a band saw. Now the band saw is going to be used to cut out our rough shape of our book stand. One thing nice about the band saw is that as we cut we can make pretty sharp curves and it will give us a nice finished rough cut. Next I am going to be using a spindle type sander to help me form some of the inside radius and a disc type sander to help me form some of the outside radius on my pieces. Additionally, we are going to need a power drill. What we are going to be using this for is to drill the pilot holes for our hinge screws and then we are going to put a screw driver bit in it and allow it to help us to screw those hinges onto our pieces. And lastly I am going to be using a small quarter sheet palm sander and I am going to be using this to help do my final sanding on my project."
