"JEANNETTE WHITE: Hi. I'm Jeannette White on behalf of Expert Village and Piper's Quilts & Comforts in Sugarhouse. Today, we're going to be talking about a thing that's a spinoff of string piecing. You can see right here underneath my presser foot, I've got a little scrap of fabric. Now, I'm going to piece these two pieces together and I'm sewing off of my little scrap of fabric and stitching together the pieces that I wanted to sew. Now, I'm done. And normally, you would be lifting up your presser foot bringing your needle to the highest position and pulling out your stitching and cutting your thread, but we're not going to do that. We're going to take a little piece of scrap of fabric and I usually keep just a little cup of 'em right next to my sewing machine. I'm going to feed that underneath my presser foot and sew onto it. Then, I'm going to take my scissors and cut free what I've just stitched for my quilt. The advantage is in this is that you never have fly threads that are all over the place on your floor and making a terrible mess. You don't have to be lifting your presser foot up and down and you have smooth stitches even at the very beginning. This is a very efficient way of doing all of your stitching. And if you can just remember to do it, and it's a hard habit to break from lifting up your presser foot, you're going to find that this is a wonderful thing for all of your stitching."
