on 1/23/2009 I have NEVER encountered a book that called what Elissa did a double crochet. Some would publish that as an extended single crochet which is often used to apply beads to a crocheted fabric.
This video should be removed as it perpetuates misinformation and does not help beginners who would also learn improper yarn tension. In order to hold a loose loop to match with the chained half of the "double stitch," improper tension must be held for the first loop which is not pulled tight at all... despite Elissa holding the yarn in a stranglehold.

on 8/2/2008 Enjoyed your video but your Double Crochet is missing the YO in the beginning. Ive never seen a DC stitch done this way and I have been crochetting for nearly 30 years.

"Hi, my name's Elissa with expertvillage.com and today I'm going to show you how to crochet a scarf. So now I'm going to teach you how to make a double crochet stitch. Get a good grip on your yarn. You're going to start off just like the single crochet, you'll see this loop formed by your stitches with two threads on the top and one on the bottom and you'll stick your hook through that little hole there, pull the yarn through like you would a single crochet. Instead of pulling the second piece of yarn through both loops, for the double crochet, you're just going to go through the first one, and then do it again, so you're basically just making a longer stitch. So, let me show you that again. You're going to put your crochet hook through the second stitch here, pull your yarn through once, pull it through a second time, and then you're ready to pull it through. Okay, so let me show you this double crochet again. Pull your needle through the hole, pull your yarn through, do one loop and then the second. And you're ready to do a hole row of double crochet. It's good to keep your index finger on this loop here when you're doing it so you don't accidentally pull the thread through it when you're not suppose to. You're just going to continue on the whole length of your scarf, and this is going to go by much more quickly than the single crochet because you are making a longer stitch so you're getting more progress done in fewer stitches than you would with the single crochet. Okay, coming up on my last stitch, pull it through one, pull it through a second time and then you're ready to start your next row, and don't forget to do your single chain stitch at the end so that you can turn your piece around and start on the next row. And, that's the double crochet stitch."
