Through Nailing for Framing with a Nail Gun

"This is Rob McMahon with ExpertVillage. Now, with a framing gun, there is generally two different, two different types of nailing styles that you use. One is through nailing which is preferable in most situations because it gives you the most strength. These nails which are commonly used for framing are rated for 500 pounds a piece. Now, when you're framing, strength is your main objective. If you're got your wall, we'll just use this piece of 2x4 to represent a bottom plate of a wall, so, you'd pull your layout and we'll stay with sixteen inch centers here, and most preferably you'll build your walls laying down on the floor. This will allow you for through nailing. So, you'll have your plate sitting like this and your stud lining up on the end there. I'm going to turn it this way so you can see a little bit better. Now, through nailing is coming from under the plate and into your stud. That gives you the most strength. Now, at this point here, you've got a thousand pounds of load bearing weight there. When you stand your wall up, it's not going to kick one way or the other because the nails are coming straight up through. And, you would do the same with the top plate. This is the method you want to use whenever possible."
