People have been sewing their own clothing, bedding, and upholstery since practically the beginning of time. In fact, sewing predates the weaving of cloth, and was nearly universal among Paleolithic human populations. Sewing is the basic act of using a needle and thread to stitch together cloth, leather, furs or other material to produce a variety of household items. Today, most sewing is done by industrial sewing machines, however many people continue to sew for themselves, repairing clothes, mending seams, or making simple items like curtains or table cloths.
In this free video series, our expert will teach you how to sew a zipper. If you've ever thrown away a piece of clothing because of a broken zipper, this is the video for you to watch. Get step-by-step instructions for sewing three different kinds of zippers, including an invisible zipper, side zipper and center zipper. You will learn how to make seam allowances, iron, pin and baste the materials, and sewing everything together. If you are handy with a sewing machine or a novice sewer, this video will help you learn how to sew basic zippers onto clothing.
"Hi! I'm Karen for Expert Village. Today I'll be showing you how to sew in 3 different installations. This one is an invisible zipper. It's called an invisible zipper, because you really can't see that there's a zipper there. It looks like a seam, but there is indeed a zipper there. You need a special foot to install this zipper, and I'll tell you more about that later. Next, we're going to do a flapped over zipper installation like this. It's done a little strange with the red thread for illustration purposes, but there is our lapped over zipper installation. Last, I'll show you a center zipper installation, but I'll show it to you in a ready made garment where the zipper was faulty, and I'll show you how to remove a zipper and replace it. "

on 12/31/2008 Nice video series, but at the moment its sorted in alphabetic order (not with the flow of the video). As a result this intro clip appears as number 3 in both:
a) The horizontal video scroll area below clip, and
b) The series portal page http://www.expertvillage.com/video/70181_sewing-zippers-side-basting.htm )
If it could be sorted in the correct order, or alter the headings so that the alphabetical sorting puts them in the correct sequence. e.g. make this video clip title "01/25 Different Kinds of Zippers", and the next "02/25 Materials for Invisible Zipper" etc.

on 8/2/2008 I have been sewing for a couple decades, and the invisible zipper has always stumped me. I am making a satin dress for a friend's daughter, because my friend says her zippers never look right. Thanks to you, I feel confident. (I signed up just so I could tell Karen that she is brilliant.)
