Series Summary

Using pastels to create art is a centuries old technique. During the eighteenth century, European artists such as Jean Baptiste Simeon Chardin, used pastels to paint portraits. Renowned artist Edgar Degas used them more than any other in his time and was followed by his student Mary Cassatt. Pastels are characterized by their soft shading and subtle hues. Pastels come in various forms including oil pastels, chalk pastels, and pastel pencils. Using pastels to create art such as landscapes and portraits is a rewarding and often times challenging endeavor. If you would like to learn how to use pastels, and don't know where to start, you can learn for free, online, from one of our experts.

In this free online video series, learn how to get started using pastels, from artist Melody Mann. She will demonstrate how to draw with oil pastels and blend them, how to draw with chalk, how to draw with pastel pencils, how to blend chalk pastels with water, how to create pastel art, and how to use pastels on black paper. Video Transcript

"Hi! I'm Melody. On behalf of Expert Village, today I'm going to show you a little bit about drawing with pastels. There are a lot of different types of pastels. There's a chalky version. It's more like a chalk. There are some that are actually oil based and we also have the pencil style. All different colors. Some of these colors you'll notice are blends of other colors, the primary colors. In this set, it's mostly primary colors, and in this set it's a variation. In the next segment, we'll go over how to use some of these colors and how to blend them."
