New York is a gourmet diner's paradise with an international array of styles and flavors to suit every budget and taste bud. If you're planning to be in midtown, not far from the theater district, plan a stop at one of the better-known restaurants for a special and memorable meal. But do plan--for most of the best restaurants, reservations are mandatory.

The Modern

  • The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art is chic and sleek, with Bauhaus influenced architecture and light pouring in from all sides. It has are excellent views of the Sculpture Garden and all the furniture and tableware reflects the greatest modern designers. Some of the work is in the museum's collection. The kitchen turns out fresh seasonal ingredients with an a la carte lunch and a prix-fixe dinner menu. The restaurant's dining room focuses on French cuisine and is closed Sundays. The bar room has a wide selection of rustic Alsatian dishes and is open seven days. Try the warm lamb and goat cheese terrine with pistachios, the homemade Alsatian country sausage, slow-poached Maine lobster in Reisling-ginger broth, or oven-roasted trumpet mushrooms with mussels and almonds. Business casual dress is appropriate. The Bar Room accepts walk-ins.

Le Bernardin

  • Le Bernardin is a legendary fish house, about as upscale as you can get and consistently in the top echelons of New York City fine dining establishments. The restaurant specializes in fish and French cuisine. Try the marinated hamachi with nuoc mam vinaigrette, the grilled Hawaiian escolar with lime mousseline, barely cooked organic salmon with braised burgundy snails, or wild striped bass with corn cannelloni and perigord sauce. What you will not find at Le Bernardin is Chilean sea bass, grouper, shark, swordfish, marlin, sailfish or wild bluefin tuna. The restaurant supports educational and practical efforts to encourage the recovery of endangered ocean species. Jackets and reservations are required.

China Grill

  • China Grill offers Asian-inspired world cuisine. The 30-foot high ceilings allow for multi-level dining spaces surrounding a visible central kitchen and two bars. It's a power-lunch, happy-hour spot for midtown Manhattan movers and shakers with plenty of room for tourists and locals who just like the food and the ambiance. Try grilled Szechuan beef with sake, soy, shallots and cilantro. Or get a little wild and sample lobster pancakes with chili coconut sauce. The sharing-style menu has influences from Italy, Japan, China and the Americas. Don't leave without tasting its famous wasabi mashed potatoes. Dress is business casual and reservations are definitely recommended.
