There are various types of sewing needles available. When choosing sewing needles, there are certain requirements that should be followed. Some needles are for specific types of stitches, such as, topstitching or hemstitching. To give your finished project a polished look, you should determine the type of stitch that you want, the texture of the fabric and the type of thread.
Universal Point Needle
The universal point needle is typically used to sew woven and knitted fabrics. They can be used with sewing machines that use a flat shank. (A flat shank is the upper end of the needle that is held by the needle bar or set screw.) Although the point of the needle is round, it can still be used to pierce through yarns that are woven or knitted tightly together.
These types of needles have sharp points and are used to do topstitching and edge stitching. They are also used to sew fabrics such as silk and microfiber fabrics.
The overlock needle can be used to sew different types of fabric. They have sharp points, making it easier to pierce tightly woven fabric.
Stretch needles are used to sew spandex material. This type of needle helps to prevent skipped stitches. You may not be able to use them in all types of machines.
The topstitch needle has a large eye and a large groove. This helps to accommodate the size of the thread. With their extra sharp point, they are suitable for topstitching.
These needles have a different look from the others. They have wide metal wings on both sides. When they are used to sew fabrics such as linen and batiste, they create large holes. The purpose of the hemstitch needle is to make decorative stitching and embroidery.
