Rustic Painting Ideas for Walls

Save

If you want to give your home a charming, rustic look, reminiscent of a country cottage or log cabin, start with your walls. While old-fashioned rocking chairs and tables made of gnarled wood left unfinished can help create a rustic look, such things can get pricey, whereas paint is relatively inexpensive and requires little more than some time and energy on your part.

Faux Textured Walls

  • Paint can be used to create the illusion of texture on your walls. Choose a shade that brings out the color of wood flooring, such as mustard yellow or dark rose. Then select a similar color to the first, but in a slightly lighter or darker hue. Roll on one color on your walls. After that dries, use a sponge or rag to apply the second color. Simply dip the rag lightly in the paint and "scrub" it on. Don't worry about covering every inch of the walls; the idea is to let the first paint color show through intermittently.

Aged Walls

  • Take inspiration from an old wooden cottage with washed-out colors made from natural dyes. Choose a faded white or faded green, or go for an antique blue and white combination. Create an old, worn-out look by giving your walls a coat of blue paint, letting it dry, then adding a second coat. Before that coat dries, softly scrub your walls in an up and down motion with a gentle cloth dipped lightly in the white color. The resulting appearance is a blue color that time has faded away in places.

Earth Tones

  • Dark, brick reds and other warm earth tones can give your room a rustic feel. If you feel adventurous, use painter's tape to create the appearance of a brick wall. Simply tape off brick-sized squares and apply paint with a sponge. However, avoid fire-engine reds. Dark beiges and browns also create a warm, homey feel. Make sure your walls complement other colors in the room as well as any adjoining rooms. Wall borders and stencils in a rustic motif can also add visual interest.
