Decorating Ideas for a Clipboard

Whether you use a clipboard as a go-anywhere desk or to keep track of stats on a playing field, the sturdy device can be a bit bland in its store-bought state. Instead of settling for a plain clipboard, get a little creative with decorations. Express your artistic style or make your clipboard a way to show off your hobbies and interests, instead of just a place to secure papers.

Clipboard Collage

  • You may have participated in the artistic style of collage when doing scrapbooking or putting together a framed collection of photos, but your clipboard can serve as an ideal collage base. Collect a handful of pieces of paper, such as event tickets, receipts from purchases, photos, pieces of confetti and stickers. Turn your clipboard over so the backside (the side without the clip) is facing up. Dab dots of glue and attach the collage pieces to the board. Collage isn't a perfect medium; overlap items and leave spaces as you prefer. Once you've got everything in position, trim any papers that hang over the edge of the clipboard. Wrap the back of the clipboard with contact paper, a sticky roll that instantly adheres to and protects the pictures. Repeat for the other side of the clipboard if desired; this is the side that will be covered with clipped papers.

Super Sticks

  • Highway drivers announce the makeup of their families (and the residents of their vehicles) with vinyl stick-figure decorations on the backs of their car windows. You may have seen little white collections of stick figures, including a parent or two, different-sized children and even some pet shapes. The stick figures come in a variety of styles, such as sporting uniforms, wearing pigtails and even dancing. There are no restrictions on where the stickers may be applied, so if you'd like to keep your family (of any kind) close, create or buy the stickers and apply them to your clipboard. Your stick-figure family may consist of a solo person stick figure and five cat stick figures, or two adults, or lots of kids. Most stick-figure-family stickers are in white so they can be easily seen on a car's rearview window. If your clipboard is white or a very light color, search for stickers printed in dark or neon colors or contact a vendor for special printing.

Team Spirit

  • Clipboards are often featured at the sidelines of major league sports games, clutched tightly by nervous coaches or, in times of defeat, hurled at the ground in dismay. While you may not be doing the coaching, your clipboard can still show off your team spirit. Decorate your clipboard in the theme of your favorite sports franchise. If you're a fan of the Baltimore Ravens football team, for example, paint the clipboard in purple and black stripes and add a Ravens decal to the back. Other options include covering the clipboard with team bumper stickers or creating a pom pom and attaching it through the hole at the top of the clip. Use white paint or a color that can be easily seen in contrast to the team's colors to write "Go Team!" or "#1 Yankees Fan!" on the clipboard to let any passersby know how much of a fan you really are.
