Decorating Ideas for a Man's Kitchen

The decor of a man's kitchen is primarily dictated by his personality. Still, there are some things a man should avoid when it comes to kitchen decor if he does not want his kitchen to present an overly feminine appearance. The kitchen in a man's house should reflect the fact that a man lives there, not a woman.

  • Choose simple, modern colors that are strong and bold. Avoid pastels, which tend to feel feminine. Instead choose darker colors such as gray, black, silver and dark green. While blue is considered a strong masculine color, it also suppresses the appetite, according to Color Wheel Pro, and neither gender should use it in a kitchen. Deep cherry cabinets and stainless steel appliances will also give a kitchen a masculine feel.

  • Keep the clutter in your kitchen to a minimum. Most women are turned off by a mess, especially in the kitchen. A man's kitchen should have decor that helps him stay organized. Try storing cooking tools in sleek stainless steel cylinders. Install a matching stainless steel cooking rack over the island, and hang some pots and pans from it to give the impression that you cook even if you don't. Clean, modern lines present a masculine feel. Avoid "country" style items, such as baskets, and stick with sleek, modern storage containers. Equally modern lights add drama to your kitchen but still keep the feeling masculine. Try track lighting or pendant lights with distinctive shades.

  • Avoid decorating with anything flowery, such as floral curtains. Use simple paper or bamboo shades on the windows instead. The same goes for silk flower arrangements, patterned china or floral prints. Instead choose a few abstract or artistic prints to hang on the walls. Black and white photos of wine bottles, for example, match the food and drink theme of a kitchen but are still masculine in appearance. Instead of displaying your grandmother's china, save it for your future wife or daughter, and display some interesting pieces of pottery (as long as they are not lavishly decorated) or pewter.
