Garage Wall Ideas

Save

Garages often end up becoming a catchall for everything from tools to Christmas ornaments. A common mistake is that people stack items in boxes instead of maximizing the use of the garage walls. By using a few simple tools and materials, the garage walls can be transformed so that items stored and used in the garage are in place, in reach, and ready to use when they're needed.

Slat Walls

  • Slat wallboard systems provide many advantages. They make the look of the garage wall smooth and contemporary. They give you the opportunity to incorporate hooks from which you can attach items to store so that they appear neat and organized. Another advantage is that they allow you the opportunity to switch and change how items are organized and adjust the purpose of the wall space.

Pegboard Walls

  • You can inexpensively make garage walls a space to organize items by using pegboards. Most come in brown pressboard or pre-painted white. From there you can spray paint the pegboard to any color. Pegboards give you versatility in how to organize items. They are prefabricated with punch holes every inch, so that you can place hooks wherever they're needed. From there you can determine where you want to hang tools, lawn care items and sports equipment. You can even set aside a space for hooks for wet clothing and umbrellas to allow them to dray in the garage instead of dragging water, mud and dirt into the house.

Hooks

  • Hooks can be a quick and easy solution to give a look of organization to garage walls. Use different sizes of hooks to hang everything from electrical cords to power tools and lawn care equipment. To get an idea of how much room each item will need, lay all the items on the floor of the garage you want to hang and measure how much room they will take up. It will also allow you move items around to efficiently use the space. Once they hooks are attached they become semi-permanent. Use a marker pen or chalk to identify where to place the hooks on the garage wall.

Shelving

  • Installing shelving is another inexpensive way to make a garage look neat. Shelving can allow you to group similar items into baskets and containers so that you know where they are when you need them. Use a stud finder to locate the wall stud so that the strips will securely hold the shelves. The more strips you add the sturdier the shelves will be.

Cabinets

  • Cabinets can be purchased in ready-to-assemble or preassembled in various heights and widths. Rolling caster tool stations also make for a well-organized garage. A new look is to install contemporary chrome or stainless steel cabinets to give garage walls a high-end look.
