Tradition dictates that wedding anniversaries be celebrated with a different gift each year. The first anniversary is traditionally celebrated with the simplicity of paper, and stationery is often given as the customary gift. Show reverence for this tradition while getting creative with a paper-themed party celebrating the couple's first year of marriage.
Play upon the "paper anniversary" theme by incorporating newspaper in the party invitation. Use card stock paper to sandwich a piece of newspaper as a border on the invitation. Or use a computer to mimic the look of a newspaper classified section, with the party invitation being a circled advertisement.
Typically, an anniversary party is not thrown by the couple themselves, but by friends or family. To prevent invitees from thinking the party is simply a bid for gifts, be clear on the invitation that the intention is to help the couple celebrate. It is the guests' presence, not their presents, that the couple is longing for.
First wedding anniversary parties have nearly limitless potential for decorations. As the paper anniversary, all sorts of different paper objects can create a lovely scene that is both clever and elegant.
If your invitations used newspaper, then carry that theme into the party itself. Set the tables with paper tablecloths in your choice of color, and then use newspaper as part of your centerpieces. Lay two sheets in the center of the table, in a criss-cross fashion, and set decorations on top. Add silver vases, filled with white paper roses. Encourage guests to each take a rose, unroll it and write an anniversary wish to the couple.
As an alternative to newspaper, set each place with a delicate origami sculpture and hang paper lanterns to cement your paper theme.
On the first wedding anniversary, it is customary for the couple to eat the top layer of their wedding cake. Add that tradition to your first anniversary party by throwing a dessert reception. Serve coffee, cocktails and desserts with a special time set aside for the couple to feed one another their preserved wedding cake. Provide a cake in the same flavors as the original wedding cake for the guests to enjoy while the couple eats their cake.
