Mold and mildew growth is a common problem in bathrooms where moisture levels are higher than other locations in a home. Sinks, bathroom tiles and showers or tubs are common areas for mildew and mold growth as a result of the water buildup. Though most mildew and mold growth is not harmful to humans, some varieties are harmful to human health, especially to children.
Mold allergies are a common problem that occurs when there is mold growth in a home. Allergies can range from the basic hay fever symptoms of sneezing and coughing to serious allergies that require medical attention, like rashes or swelling. Everyone has different reactions to mold, and when allergies occur, the symptoms and problems vary on the individual. The most common mold and mildew allergy results in the basic symptoms of sneezing and coughing, which is annoying and persistent. In the worst case, it can result in breathing problems.
Black mold is a toxic mold that is harmful to human health. While the most common symptom of the mold is typical allergies, this type of mold can also cause irritation that results in headaches, dizziness and even problems with mental capacities when there is long term exposure. Black mold is a rare mold type, but it can grow in bathrooms around the tub and needs immediate removal to prevent health problems. In the worst case, this type of mold can cause diseases in those with low immune systems.
Aches and Pains
While sicknesses are uncommon problems associated with mold from the bathroom, some individuals can become very sick when exposed to mold over time. Young children, elderly and pregnant women can end up with flu-like symptoms as a result of the mold and mildew in the bathroom. Aches and pains that result from the sickness are common health problems associated with mold exposure in those who are sensitive to the mold and mildew. Children are especially at risk for sicknesses associated with mold from the bathroom.
