Choosing draperies for a home can be a difficult task for a person, especially if that person is a guy. There are literally hundreds of ideas to choose from and not all of them are particularly masculine. Take a few things into consideration when planning to buy or make draperies for the man in your life for a bedroom, office or just for a bachelor’s home.
Remember that most standard curtains cover the length of the window casings. However, some draperies hang completely to the floor. Most men would probably prefer shorter curtains or drapes. Men will normally go for the simpler curtains that do not need a lot of upkeep. Keep the curtains to the length of the window casings and add tiebacks. The tiebacks allow the curtains to allow in sunlight and fresh air, but the guy can also close the curtains if he wants privacy.
Look for a header style that is more masculine than another. Drapes come in all sorts of header styles. Window treatments with tab headers use tabs to hold the draperies onto the curtain rod. Some drapes have a rod pocket casing where you insert a rod through the draperies and then hang the rod on the appropriate hardware on the window casing. Pleat style headers add elegance to a room. Here again, most men will probably prefer simple. Tabs do not have the ruffled look of window coverings with rod pocket casings or the elegance of pleated drapes, making them more masculine.
Choose from a wide variety of drapery fabric. Not only can you choose from different colors, but also different prints and textures. Most of the time the choices you make in fabric will be what fits in with the present décor of the room. For the man’s private space, choose stripes or plaids instead of large floral prints. Choose shades of colors such as black, blue, brown or green for a masculine window treatment, instead of pinks or purples.
Hang simple shades as masculine window treatments instead of having any type of curtain at all. Men can raise and lower the shades as desired. Shades come in a wide variety of styles and colors, many of which are completely appropriate for men. Choose from bamboo or rattan instead of fabric or plastic. You also have the option of choosing from horizontal or vertical shades.
