Texas Theme Design Ideas

When decorating your home or room in a Texas theme, it is easy to go overboard on cowboy-style decorations. A Texas theme can be incorporated into any design style, from traditional to ultra-contemporary. To keep the decor more sophisticated, install the theme in subtle elements throughout the room to create a Texas atmosphere.

Bring in the Longhorn

  • A quintessential element in a Texas-themed design is the longhorn skull. When decorating your room, choose a longhorn element that will stand out without seeming overdone or cartoonish. You might locate a wall hanging, for example, or a contemporary painting that incorporates the longhorn silhouette. For a more subtle touch, look for pieces of furniture like magazine racks or lamp pulls with the longhorn design. In a Texas-themed home with a more homey feel, longhorn-print pillows can add a warm touch to a couch or chair.

Rustic Coffee Table

  • A coffee table can be a great place to introduce an unexpected Texas element. Look for unique designs, like a wagon wheel topped with glass on a round coffee table. To add a touch of country-western flair, look for coffee tables with a rustic, antique finish--or, even better, find an actual antique. Look for a table made out of the gnarled wood that can be found in the Texas heat; the knots will make it an interesting conversation piece. When paired with contemporary furniture, this type of element adds Texas style without sacrificing sophistication.

Desert Colors

  • When designing with a Texas theme, stick to natural colors that are reminiscent of the back country and cowboy country. Think neutral browns for furniture, natural hardwood floors, exposed wooden beams, and soft, pale desert colors for walls. This type of color scheme invokes desert imagery; for accents, use pops of green, reddish-orange or blue to complement the base colors.

Texas-Themed Elements

  • Look for contemporary objects with a rustic flair. Lamps with whitewashed antlers as bases will make visitors look twice. A rug with a low-contrast animal print can be elegant without the full effect of a bear-skin rug. A snakeskin-stamped leather wall covering adds a wild touch to an accent wall or a small bathroom.

Natural Wood

  • Few things say down-to-earth Texas like natural wooden elements. Use tables, desks and accents in wide-grain wood--fine-grained pieces eliminate the slightly rough feeling that brings to mind cowboys in rustic cabins in the Texas wilderness. The options are endless: for a more overt design, look for rustic wood dining room tables or couches. For a more subtle touch, find end tables, lamps or picture frames that have a slightly unfinished look. Use wood that has visible knots or imperfections to give it an authentic, earthy look.
