Interior Painting Ideas for Slanted Ceilings

Save

A sloped ceiling works either for or against a room; in a small room with few windows, the lowered ceilings often make the room feel cramped, but in a larger, lighter room, slanted ceilings create movement for the eye and add architectural interest. For either scenario, an interior paint plan can help hide or highlight your room's slanted walls.

Monotone

  • Designers paint small rooms with sloped ceilings with one color to visually increase the space in the room. Painting the ceilings a slightly lighter shade than the walls further decreases the amount of contrast between the ceilings and walls, visually pushing the ceiling higher. If your room has light colored floors, picking a paint color that is similar to the floor color or choosing a semi-gloss for the ceiling will increase the feeling of spaciousness in the room even further.

Two-Color Treatments

  • To highlight the architectural interest that sloped ceilings lend a space, paint the ceilings and walls with contrasting colors. A lighter hue is favored for the ceiling to avoid making the room feel cavelike, but otherwise your tastes can dictate your color choices. Sloped ceilings create visually interesting wall shapes; to take advantage of your wall's geometry, paint only one of the triangular or semi-triangular walls a bright hue and paint the other walls and the ceiling white or light neutral. The colored wall becomes an instant focal point.

Using Three or More Colors

  • If only part of the ceiling is slanted and the other area is flat, you may want to use three colors: paint the flat area one color, the slanted area another and the walls a third. Choose three colors if you want to do vertical striping; two closely matched hues for the stripes and a white or light neutral for the ceiling. Vertical stripes add more architectural interest to a space while raising the height of the ceiling, making it an ideal paint treatment for a room with slanted ceilings.
