Although it was created to honor hard workers, for many Labor Day Weekend signifies the end of summer and the last weekend before school starts, which means parties, festivals and parades. With warm temperatures, the beach and an array of other attractions there is a number of things to do in Los Angeles over the holiday weekend.

  1. The 14th Annual Sweet & Hot Music Festival

    • With over fifty live musical performances, the 14th Annual Sweet & Hot Music Festival at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel, features popular jazz, blues, swing and big band artists from around the country. Celebrating music and dance from the 1920s through the 1950s, the festival takes place over Labor Day Weekend with performances by Jack Sheldon, Herb Jeffries, Banu Gibson, Tim laughlin and many more.(See References 1) Special events include the Decade of Dances, a songwriters showcase featuring several popular musicians and a singing contest, creatively called Americans Idle, where the winner receives complimentary tickets for the entire weekend. The four-day festival takes place indoors on eight stages from September 3rd to the 6th.

    L.A. County Fair

    • Running from September 4, 2010, to October 3, 2010, the annual L.A. County Fair has been entertaining millions since it started in 1922. As the largest county fair in North America, there is something for everyone---from beer, cooking and dairy competitions to pirate shows, blooming gardens and Three Centuries of Artistic Innovations. Learn about dinosaurs and uncover fossils at Jurassic Planet, see Medieval magic, music and acrobatics at the Dragon's Den Stage, or discover the secrets of the circus at Esmeralda's Traveling Circus. (See References 2) For animal lovers, see stunt dog shows, farm animals and a jungle with monkeys, kangaroos and reptiles. There is also concerts featuring some of the biggest names of today and yesterday, extreme motocross and dozens of rides and carnival games.

    Leimert Park Village African Art & Music Festival

    • During Labor Day Weekend, the second annual Leimert Park Village African Art & Music Festival will be held at the historic Leimert Park Village in southwestern Los Angeles. With over 10,000 expected attendees, the festival features live entertainment all weekend long, including free reggae, blues and jazz concerts from performers such as Wadada, Azar Lawrence, Dwight Trible, LTD and Medusa. (See References 3) The family friendly community event also features a free fashion show everyday, international food court and over forty artist vendors with handmade jewelry, sculptors, clothing and paintings. For kids, there is a petting zoo, local African dance groups, face painting and storytelling.
