Outdoor Tropical Theme Ideas
Whether you are planning for an outdoor tropical themed party or want your backyard to have a tropical flair, the look can be achieved by adding various elements of the tropics, lighting, water and nature. These tropical theme ideas can be used during the day or night, for outdoor entertaining or simply to enjoy the look of a man-made tropical paradise. Does this Spark an idea?

Lighting
-
Tropical themed lighting sets an ambiance to the décor that can be used during the evening and nighttime hours. Stick tall tiki lanterns into the ground around the yard or patio areas. Made of bamboo, they are filled with oil that can be refilled when it runs out. Add Bali-style wooden carved lanterns with thatched roofs made of fiber from a sugar palm tree known as ijuk. They use electricity but are suitable for the outdoors. Make homemade lanterns from large glass jars and use tea candles that come with metal holders. Decorate the jars with vibrant acrylic painted designs of tropical flowers, plants or animals. Or hang brightly colored paper lanterns that are powered by electricity or candles.
Artwork and Nature
-
Add tiki-style animal and human masks on the wall areas outside or create your own made of carved and painted or stained wood. Place molded or carved stone statuary or carved and painted wood figurines of tropical animals in the garden and on the patio or deck. Use brightly colored birds, exotic tropical animals, snakes and insects. Add recordings of the sounds of nature to add more sensation to a tropical themed party. Don't forget the flowers and plants that make a tropical paradise lush. If you live in the right climate and want a permanent tropical addition, add a palm tree or two to the landscape. For fun décor at parties add lit versions of artificial palm trees or inflatable palm trees. Add potted or fake tropical flowers and greenery in pots in bright colors, even hanging plants to fill the area with tropical growth.

Water
-
No tropical theme is complete without some element or implied element of water added to the decor. Add beach chairs or wicker chairs for seating. Use elegant wood ones for a more formal look or less expensive folding chairs in bright colors. For extra pizzazz, add an area with sand and a large beach umbrella made of vibrant fabric or with a thatched top for a natural look. Gather shells of different sizes. Use large ones to hold candles or snacks or embed candles in small ones. Put exotic flower heads floating in water in a large glass bowl, a fish pond or in large shells. With a bigger budget, build a small corner stone waterfall or a fishpond with accompanying statuary, a tiki head or a tropical water bird. If you have a swimming pool, for a touch of humor, get inflatable crocodiles, water birds, floating beach style chairs or a small inflatable floating island.
