Sweet 16 birthday bashes have become ever-popular with the rise of pop culture television showcasing well-off teens whose parents go through hell and high waters for their big day. From horse-drawn carriages to night club replicas, the Sweet 16 has become a creative rights of passage celebration. Birthdays celebrated during special holidays can offer creative solutions for intermingling both the birthday party and holiday. Planning a Sweet 16 with a Halloween theme doesn’t have to be “scary”; there are several common parties ideas that can be easily arranged with an original twist.
Halloween is the perfect time for scary movies and depending on the event budget and number of guests, a movie theme party can be a great idea that provides lots of anticipation and fun. The guest of honor could design invitations that look like movie tickets and mail or hand deliver them to anticipated guests. A large screen can be rented from an audio visual company and horror movies can run continuously from a hotel ballroom or outdoor space. Reproducing a movie theater snack bar well stocked with all the candy, popcorn and snack amenities would be a nice spin on the event as well. Many movies also have video game versions that can be a supplemental activity for those who are watching movies. The teens can also play board games such as Boo opoly, a Monopoly game with a twist that is specially created for the spooky season and can be found at online superstore BoardGames.com. After a night of “freaky fun”, guests can leave the party with movie theater gift cards.
Spooky Scavenger Hunt
Decorate the backyard and indoor area with common Halloween decorations like ghouls, spider webs and jack-o-lanterns to set the scene for a great scavenger hunt. Pre-design a path for the teens to embark on that could include both inside and outside navigation. Local arts and crafts stores carry notepads and blank card cutouts of ghosts, black cats and other themed items that can be used to write out clues for each step on the hunting path. Each stop should have prizes as rewards for the clues like $10 gift cards to apparel stores, gas stations or restaurants. The larger the space for the track, the more detailed it can be including things like obstacle courses and pit stops that require them to perform crazy tasks. Having older friends and family dressed up as scary characters that jump out can be a surprising addition.
"Ghoul" Costume Party
For the Sweet 16-year old begging for a carbon-copy of the hit MTV show My Super Sweet 16, a dance party might be the trick to wow them and their guests. Start off by sending masks as invitations that alert guests that they will be invited to a costume party. Tag a big ticket prize for the guest with the most creative costume. Arrange with a local radio station personality to host and serve as the DJ, and book a large venue such as a night club or hotel ballroom to transform the space into a mega bash. Hire a caterer to create custom food items and a candy bar for attendees to enjoy. A cake from a specialty baker can be ordered designed in the shape of Frankenstein, popular thriller movie character or a tombstone with spiders and bugs surrounding it. Buy favors like glow sticks, bracelets and headpieces for the costumed teens and rent a photo booth for them to take candid photos and retain as keepsakes.
