Creative Ideas to Make Movie Reel Film Decor

A movie reel is a icon of Hollywood -- in particular Hollywood's Golden Age. It's a reminder of beloved movie moments. Film buffs often re-create that magic by decorating their homes with Hollywood memorabilia. Something as simple as a movie reel can be used as a decorating theme throughout the home, or an actual antique reel can be re-purposed as wall art for a media room or home theater.

Wall and Window Treatments

  • There are any number of wallpaper borders available that depict movie reels, movie posters lined by movie reels, or frames from particular movies. These make clever borders for the walls of a media room or even a teen's bedroom, since they can be customized by genre: movie-poster borders depict romances, B-movies or campy monster flicks. Windows may be covered in movie-palace red velvet with movie-reel-shaped tiebacks.

  • There is a world of artwork incorporating movie reels: Paintings, photography and sculpture use reels with Hollywood icons in every conceivable combination. A simple wall art sculpture depicting a pair of movie reels and a strip of film makes a nice decoration for a media room. Display a vintage black and white photo from your favorite movie showing behind-the-scenes camera work. If you want something a little more quirky, choose a framed work of art depicting your favorite star -- behind the camera for once -- filming you.

Textiles and Fabrics

  • If you want your movie reel theme to extend past the walls, decorate with round pillows printed to resemble movie reels; afghans or throws with a movie-reel or Hollywood theme; or for a real work of craftsmanship, a handmade blanket or quilt depicting a movie reel and scenes from your favorite movie or favorite genre -- the movies of Errol Flynn for your son's room, for example, or a tribute to Bogart's noir classics for a guest bedroom or as wall art for a home theater.

  • A surprising number of furniture items are made from movie reels, or incorporate movie reels into their design. You can buy wine racks that look like movie reels and small round coffee tables with reels embedded in clear plastic. You can buy clocks or lamps made from old movie reels; you can use them as bookends or group them with old movie posters for a Hollywood-themed wall display.
